I think the difference between 24/44 and 24/96 will be fairly minimal in most cases. The jump from 320 MP3 to 16/44 is a pretty big one, far bigger than going from 16/44 to 24/96 unless you are listening in a critical environment, even then it depends on how it was recorded. On the iPhone, it will only top out at 24/48 also.

But I agree, even just browsing around in it already, very few are 24/96, most are HD (16/44) and a lot of the UltraHD I have seen are still 24/44 or 24/48. Classical and jazz releases are more likely to be 'hi-res' but even there it's relatively uncommon.Ĭlick to expand.I just signed up for Amazon Music HD, so I will try it out. Investigation into what the DSP was doing yielded no information, so I just had to guess.Ģ4/96 releases are still very much the minority, especially in pop/rock/blues/country/rap genres. Despite IK's claims that these are 'monitor speakers' I didn't like what I was getting, too unpredictable. Generally it's trying to make small speakers sound big, and I suspect that means boosting bass at the expense of other frequencies. earlier iLouds, B&W T7) because the DSP is fiddling with stuff in an undefined way. Still having streaming CD quality 16/44.1 would be a big upgrade from regular streaming though!Ĭlick to expand.24/96 releases are still very much the minority, especially in pop/rock/blues/country/rap genres.

That why I thought it was dumb, but I guess the app can't downsample things for us either without conversion or losing quality. Where it will kind of suck is if you are trying to reference your mix at 24/44.1 and it forces you to switch to 24/96 just to listen to the track, it will be bothersome. Since we don't typically buy or have CDs anymore it's hard to get good reference tracks for mixes, so this will be instant quality for that use. Amazon just sort of released theirs early to beat Apple to it but I have no doubt they have been collecting some for a while now too.īut, where all this will be REALLY good for us is for reference tracks. They will likely have their HD tier released very soon. I know that Apple for example has been collecting them at the higher rates for several years from the major labels through their Mastered for iTunes program.
